What is Botox?

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin produced in nature by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is synthetically made and highly purified, then injected into facial muscles that cause wrinkles on the upper face such as frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles so that these muscles will relax and no longer cause wrinkles. Over time, the wrinkles soften considerably and with repeat treatments, may even go away completely. Treatments are 15 minutes and effects last 3-4 months. Botox is the brand name of botulinum toxin made by Allergan, Inc. Other similar products are available on the market by different names.

What is the cost?

The cost is calculated per unit of toxin injected. The cost therefore depends on how many areas are treated and how many total units are required to get the desired result. For most patients who have never had this treatment before, the first treatment will cost $300-400. Some patients require more or less toxin to get their desired results so the cost can vary. The effect lasts 3-4 months. Patients who are consistent and have Botox injections regularly, may find that with time, they require either less units or injections less frequently in order to maintain their desired results. This is because, with time, the muscles atrophy.
