Surgical Dermatology

Surgical dermatology refers to minor surgical procedures used in dermatology to diagnose and treat benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) growths. Indications for procedures include biopsy of concerning lesions, treatment of precancerous growths, removal of skin cancers and removal of bothersome benign growths. Our providers consider many factors before determining which procedure is best suited for each problem. If you have questions about procedures recommended for you, please do not hesitate to ask.

Procedures offered in our clinic include:

  • Cryotherapy – The use of liquid nitrogen to remove growths, fade age spots and treat early skin cancers. This can be applied using a cotton swab, forceps or a spray device.
  • Shave biopsy – Biopsy of lesions by shave technique leaving a flat scar.
  • Punch biopsy – Biopsy of lesions using a small tool to core out a sample leaving a linear scar.
  • Excision – Full removal of lesions and a margin of normal surrounding tissue. The area is sutured closed, most often leaving a linear scar.
  • Curretage & Desiccation (C&D or ED&C) – The removal of superficial, uncomplicated skin cancers by scraping the affected area with a tool called a curette. The wound is then cauterized to increase the likelihood for successful treatment and to minimize bleeding.

What is Mohs surgery?

Mohs surgery is a special type of skin cancer surgery performed by specially trained dermatologists called Mohs surgeons. This procedure is best suited for skin cancers in cosmetically sensitive or high-risk locations. Our providers are not Mohs surgeons and do not perform this procedure but they do recommend this for certain patients. We work closely with Mohs surgeons in Eugene and Portland should Mohs surgery be required.
